In short, we will cover what makes up a lens and how you can create your own using simple household items such as straws, soda bottle caps and water! We hope you enjoy this article and look forward to seeing your creations in the comments section below! Please note: This blog post is intended for educational purposes only. Brands: Mechanics, Elastomers, Polymers Chemistry and Physics: The substances used in lenses (gems and prisms) are synthesized from basic compounds such as sodium chloride (table salt) or quartz crystal. The basic structure of a lens consists of several silica layers which when layered together make up a single object with varying properties such as curvature distortion and focus capability. Curved objects such as glasses (for lenses) or eyeglasses are made by bending normal glass around a central axis to form progressively curved shapes. Glass is often used as a medium for lenses because it is easy to work with, cheap and most importantly optical quality glass can be produced in virtually any shape required. The first part of this procedure will involve bending the wire into a cylindrical shape using needle nose pliers.  The next step requires you to bind the cylinder together using several small rubber bands. The first few times I made these lenses I simply added rubber bands around the outside to hold them together (think of it like adding layers of duct tape). However, I noticed that this causes them to warp which means they won't focus properly!  So what you should do instead is wrap the rubber bands around the center to form grooves where your two ends meet.   I have also used electrical tape in place of rubber bands, but I would advise using the rubber bands if possible because it is much easier to remove them once your lens is finished.  The following step is to place a small bead of epoxy in each groove you formed earlier. Then simply press the two ends together and you are all done!  This procedure will create a doublet lens which means that there are two separate lenses stuck together resulting in an extremely powerful piece of glass.  The final step involves testing the strength of your newly made lens by placing them under water and looking through them at an object. What to Expect You should be able to cut out the shapes using scissors or a sharp knife.  I recommend using good quality scissors that are disposable in order to prevent accidental cuts.  The rubber bands should last for about 2-3 weeks before they start coming apart, at which point you will need to trace the tube again and press the beads together again.  Don't worry though because this is an easy fix!  You can simply replace your band with another one or simply make the band smaller (which will cause it not fit inside the tube). The following two images show how I constructed my lens. Optics Ajoy Ghatak Pdf Free Download
